| Goodbye, Blue Ridge Mall
Photos by Rod Shelley Since 1958, the Blue Ridge Mall has stood at the intersection of I-70 and Blue Ridge Boulevard in Kansas City, Missouri. It was once a bustling, busy, happy place filled with shoppers. At one time it was home to well-known stores like Montgomery Wards, and J.C. Penny. I can remember many pleasant weekends strolling here with my wife, stopping for a snack after a couple hours of window shopping. Sadly, like many shopping malls around the country, the Blue Ridge Mall is about to be destroyed. Not by any act of terrorism, but by the changing winds of today's society - not to mention apathy and politics. It's a sad sight, really. As of 10-08-2005, the demolition has already begun. I spent a little time this morning capturing a few last views of the Blue Ridge Mall before it is gone forever. The white walls of the mall still look clean and new, and still echo the sounds of a better day. Farewell, old friend. 01-21-2006 - I've been unable to shoot as many photos as I'd planned due to many demands on my time, and a recent death in the family. Today, I was able to get a few last photos of the last remnants of the mall before it's completely gone. I'll be out of town next week, and I'm sure by the time I get back there will be nothing left but rubble. Enjoy the photos. |
